What is a healthy, balanced diet?

Your daily diet should include a variety of foods from the five main food groups. It's also important to get the balance right.

Every day you should try to eat:

  • at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables.
    Take the interactive 5-a-day Challenge
  • 4-6 portions of starchy foods such as bread, cereals, potatoes, rice and pasta - try to choose high fibre varieties
  • 2 portions of protein foods such as lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, peas and lentils
  • 2-3 portions of dairy foods such as milk, cheese or yoghurt

In addition, you should try to eat 2-3 portions of fish every week. One of these portions should be an oily fish such as sardines, salmon, pilchards, mackerel, herring, trout or fresh tuna, all of which are good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.
