Avoid high sugar levels
If sugary food and drinks aren't part of a child's everyday diet they're unlikely to crave them.
Here's a few tips to stop them getting a sweet tooth:
- Between meals encourage your child to stick to water and milk. Both these drinks will be kinder to teeth than fizzy drinks, squashes and fruit juice.
- Keep sweetened drinks (if they must have them) to treats or mealtimes. Try replacing fizzy drinks and squashes with well-diluted fruit juice.
- For an occasional treat try fresh orange or pineapple juice diluted with sparkling water as healthy alternative to fizzy drinks.
- Beware of processed breakfast cereals as their sugar content can be high. Go for porridge oats, sugar-free cornflakes or unsweetened wholegrain cereals and sweeten them with a sliced banana, apple, pear, berries or raisins.
